Indiana teen was going pro in racing, then crash left him paraplegic
MARTINSVILLE — The temperature hit 55 degrees that working day, a balmy December reward, the variety of day riding a bike is best for, the form of day that isn’t going to typically come together when Christmas carols are participating in and holiday browsing is at a frenzy.
Lucas Grounds woke up at 8 a.m., promptly concluded his on the net education, put on his gear and went out to experience. This may be the last day for a although, he considered. Snow and ice would surely come. Temperatures would drop.
As the morning solar shined, Lucas rode. As night fell, his mechanic and other people joined the journey. They turned onto a gravel street and headed toward some covered picket bridges.
About 7 p.m., in the dim, Lucas strike a guide pole on 1 of those bridges. He skidded and fell from his bike.
“Rider down, rider down, rider down.” David Quillen bought the phone from another rider on his headset.
“What in the world, you know?” mentioned Quillen, Lucas’ mechanic, who was forward of him on the trip.
Quillen turned about to head back to the bridge and saw Lucas’ entire body sprawled on the ground, his bicycle on its side. Quillen ran up to him.
I cannot get up.
“What do you imply you won’t be able to get up?” Quillen asked Lucas.
I can’t feel my legs. I are unable to get up.
‘It was the slowest crash of my life’
Fifteen-yr-previous Lucas had crashed lots of occasions. He acquired his very first bike at 3 several years aged, began racing at 4 and gained his initial race. He worked his way from motocross to racing Grand Countrywide Cross Nation, an off-road motorcycle series, and turned a 7-time winner.
Months just before the accident, Lucas was certain a professional offer if his season went effectively.
GNCC races aren’t for the faint of heart. They are challenging, a few hours extensive, 10 to 13 miles in the woods with hill climbs, creek jumps, logs and rocks.
There ended up many wrecks together the way. But this incident Dec. 10, 2020, it was distinctive.
“It was the slowest crash of my existence,” mentioned Lucas, now 16. “I knew what was heading on the entire time and then I hit the ground and which is when it strike me.”

This crash absolutely wasn’t like the kinds in advance of.
Lucas’ dad, Justin Grounds, was in the kitchen of the family’s Martinsville home when his mobile phone rang. Justin was headed out the doorway to acquire his young son Logan to basketball follow.
It was 7:23 p.m. Justin knows exactly what time it was since he had just logged out of his laptop following signing Lucas up for an elite place in the Tennessee Knockout Excessive Enduro, a race for the world’s prime off-street motorbike riders.
Minutes right before, Justin had sent Lucas and Quillen a textual content: “We’re in.” So when Justin’s mobile phone rang and it was Quillen on the other conclusion, he considered probably he experienced called to chat about the race.
“Lucas was in an incident,” Quillen informed Justin. “I termed 911. Go to the healthcare facility. An ambulance is on the way.”
Shanda Grounds realized at that moment her oldest son was in difficulties.
“That’s the only cause,” Shanda stated, crying. “That is the only motive he would simply call an ambulance. He is either not mindful or he’s paralyzed. All those have been the only two selections.”
Shanda stood across from her spouse and stated two terms Justin will never neglect: “He is paralyzed.”
“And I am like, ‘No way he’s paralyzed,'” Justin said. “‘No way.'”
‘Dad, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry’
At IU Health Arnett Healthcare facility, Justin and Shanda walked into Lucas’ room. Their son was lying in mattress, a neck brace on, in pain. He tried to sit up. Lucas sat up as far as he could and he seemed at Justin.
“Dad, I can’t truly feel my legs,” Lucas reported. “I am sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Justin fell to the ground sobbing, “No buddy. No buddy, it’s Alright.”
Lucas had severed his spinal twine. The X-ray of the bone sticking by means of his backbone was tough for the Grounds to glimpse at. Lucas nevertheless hasn’t found it.
Shanda’s heart broke. Justin, Lucas and Quillen had labored so tricky for Lucas’ vocation, to get him in which he was. Lucas experienced been residing in Delphi with Quillen for months. He was months from a pro offer.
“He must have felt the globe was crashing down,” she said. “All their desires and aspirations, every thing they worked for, every thing we had sacrificed, was absent.”
But Shanda was looking at her son, who was chatting to her, who was moving his arms and she felt grateful.
“Alright. We can get the job done with all of this,” she assumed. “We nonetheless have a combating chance at this.”
‘It however isn’t going to appear to be real’
Lucas was flown by IU Health Lifeline to Riley Medical center for Kids in the center of the night for operation. His spinal twine was severed and he was paralyzed from the waist down.
“I couldn’t believe it. We weren’t driving quick. We were not doing something insane,” said Quillen. “It was practically just a slip and slide type of thing. It doesn’t make any feeling and it however does not make any perception to this working day.”
Right after looking at images of the injury, the surgeon told the Grounds that Lucas experienced a 3% likelihood to walk all over again.
“The surgeon advised us, ‘Some young ones with Lucas’ personal injury, we’re able to move the stress off the spinal wire,’ and they are fortunate and will regain most, if not almost everything,” Shanda mentione
d. “And his actual words had been, ‘Lucas is not one particular of these fortunate kids.'”
But 3%. That was some thing.
“If you give Lucas a glimmer of hope that he can get improved at some thing,” Shanda explained, “he will operate as difficult as he can to get superior at that.”
Lucas expended 61 days in the medical center, to start with in the ICU and then in powerful treatment.
People first few times, Quillen slept at Riley. “I was just concerned to dying of what was heading on and if there was anything I could do,” he reported. “If there is certainly something to help, if you can find any information. It was just surreal … it nevertheless would not seem true that it transpired.”
On day four or five, Quillen got into Lucas’ room, continue to in the ICU.
“And I’m like, ‘All ideal dude, what are we heading to do following?'” Quillen claimed to Lucas. “‘We’ve acquired to figure out anything.'”
Jointly, they came up with an idea — go karts. Quillen went dwelling and begun building. “And in this article we are,” he explained.
In this article Lucas is a calendar year later with his driver’s license, cruising in an outdated luxury station wagon or in his truck that he a short while ago souped up with an LED headliner. He employs hand controls to generate — and race.
Lucas is racing again. Not dust bikes but cars and trucks. He acquired back again on the circuit in August, competing in micro sprint racing, a more compact version of total dash vehicles and a starter class for the series.
He also goes every single 7 days to Speedway Indoor Karting to race and currently holds the track record.
“He is a competitive man or woman, no make any difference what,” mentioned Quillen. “If it truly is feeding on a cheeseburger, he desires to win. He’s likely to come across a way to earn. It would not make any difference what it is.”
‘I don’t imagine I’ll forget about him ever’
From the moment Whitney Kozlowski met Lucas, she saw the competitive spirit. She saw the push and perseverance that produced him a nationwide champion in his sport.
When he started out occupational treatment with Kozlowski, Lucas required assistance to sit up in bed, to shift himself in mattress, to place on his outfits.
“A single of the very to start with visits, I questioned him to place his shorts on and he gave me a appear like I experienced three heads,” said Kozlowski, who was Lucas’ occupational therapist at Riley. “He kind of gave me this sassy tiny seem. I understood at that minute we had been likely to get along wonderful.”
Lucas begun enhancing ideal away. Kozlowski claimed she has no doubt his many years of racing made a main impact.
“He actually had that coachable athlete mentality. I consider he looked at treatment just like follow,” she claimed. “Ahead of his damage, he was extremely dedicated and practiced like outrageous and I think all that determination and travel just transitioned to treatment.”
So did Lucas’ love of all things with wheels. He put in numerous several hours at the hospital tinkering on his wheelchair. He and Kozlowski worked on acquiring up and down steep inclines, popping a wheelie and maneuvering his chair up onto a 5-inch control.
When Lucas remaining, after 7 weeks of treatment, he was offered a score — just as every single patient is supplied. The scale spans from 1 to 7, one meaning a client can do fewer than 25% of responsibilities and seven indicating they are entirely unbiased, need to have no assistance or supervision.
Lucas scored a 6, the best he could attain, specified his paralysis.
“He just worked so difficult,” said Kozlowski. “He’s very special to me. I don’t feel I’ll overlook him at any time.”
Preferred son of the sequence
Lucas wheeled his chair into the garage of his Martinsville dwelling very last month. “It can be sort of a mess in listed here,” he joked.
Inside was a bike he’s functioning on for a friend. Lucas enjoys to take care of up people’s bikes, modifying tires, rebuilding motors and what ever else they want. His truck was in there, too, with that headliner Lucas is so very pleased of.
And hanging on the back again wall of the garage is jersey after jersey sent to Lucas from professional riders after the incident. They are their championship jerseys, autographed.
Lucas was the most loved son of the series, said Shanda. So younger with so considerably assure.
“The GNCC series is the maximum amount of that kind of woods racing,” explained Justin. “To get to that level, he was rather elite.”
Lucas stated he obtained there by pushing himself to be the ideal he could.
“Then I ended up getting quite fantastic at what I was executing,” Lucas claimed. “And then this type of occurred.”
Lucas does not glimpse again, even though. He suggests it does no good. It can help no 1. As a substitute, he seems ahead. Performing just as challenging as he did racing to preserve finding better.
‘It blows my mind, looking at what he’s doing’
There is laughter inside NeuroHope, coming from the home Lucas is in. As normal, he is building jokes, creating his therapists giggle.
“He has the best frame of mind,” said Megan Lashley, a neurorecovery exercise expe
rt, who has been working with Lucas on trunk stability and strength. “He is usually willing to try out new matters.”
Give Lucas any challenge and he responds with all-out effort and hard work, Lashley stated.
NeuroHope provides recovery-based treatment for folks who are paralyzed, “for individuals who have a very trim to no likelihood to stroll once more,” Shanda explained.
If any person can beat the odds, those who know Lucas say, it is him.
“It blows my mind viewing what he is doing at this stage,” said Quillen. “I have completely far too a lot of buddies in wheelchairs, but I have hardly ever witnessed any person get it the way he has. It really is really remarkable.”
Shanda will not want Lucas’ injuries to scare other moms and dads from permitting their young ones race bikes or race GNCC.
“Lucas was not hurt on his dirk bicycle. He was not damage racing,” she stated. “He was in an incident. Incidents occur.”
From the moment he was lying on the bridge in December 2020, Lucas said, he understood he was paralyzed.
“I dealt with it then and I’m moving on,” he explained. “There is practically nothing for me in the previous. The only thing for me is in the potential.”
